The effect of specific trace elements on the bonding of nickel to single crystal sapphire was investigated. Sessile drop experiments were conducted in vacuo at 1485 C 10 C. In previous experiments, the addition of about 10,000 ppm Zr, Ti, and Cr to nickel was found to have distinct, but different effects, on the interfacial microstructure and the room-temperature bond strength between Ni and Al2O3. The present studies have been concerned with the same additives, but at much lower concentrations, viz., of the order of 800 ppm and -20 ppm. Even at these low concentrations, the same types of interfacial microstructures and fracture modes, which were characteristic for the specimens containing 10,000 ppm Cr, Ti, and Zr, were observed.
