Abstract:

Studies were made to determine dollar losses resulting from accidents which might have been avoided by arresting gear. Four aspects were considered 1 losses incurred by damage to the airplane, by injury to occupants, by damage to property, by loss of use of the airplane 2 losses incurred by the airport 3 losses incurred by the airlines due to diversions and cancellations of flights 4 forecast of the number of such incidents and losses for the period 1965-1974. Only turbojet aircraft operated by U. S. certificated air carriers and on U. S. airports were considered in estimating dollar losses and forecasts. Forecasts were based on the assumption that the environmental conditions of the past will continue, no account being taken of possible technical improvements or additional hazards. Author
