Specific loss mechanisms occurring in a superconductor generator were explored with supporting experiments to show that these losses are within acceptable limits for this application. Considerable study and also an experiment were devoted to the heating effects in the armature superconductor. Experiments were performed to demonstrate the thermal and electrical characteristics of minimum-loss, high current leads and correlate with existing theories. Also, the joints between superconducting elements and nonsuperconducting leads were investigated. Problems associated with the startup of a rotating superconductor generator of 1000 KVA rating in space vehicles were studied. Author
