Abstract:

Having already achieved laser operation with two unary ozides Gd2O3 and La2O3 doped with Nd3, emphasis is now being placed on improvement of the crystal quality and performance efficiency of these hosts, as well as the extension of this work to other primary additives. Recently a study was undertaken of multiple doping effects sensitized fluorescence, with particular attention being directed to the system Er3 is more than Tm3. Since the effect of the Er3 enhancement on Tm 3 fluorescence has been found to increase with Er3 concentration, it was decided to proceed to the limiting case where the entire host lattice acts as a sensitizer i.e., the system becomes Er2O3 Tm3. Crystal growth of this system was subsequently initiated, and pulsed and CW laser operation of this material have now been achieved. A paper describing this work has been prepared and, pending clearance of its release, will be submitted for publication in Applied Physics Letters. Author
