Nitric oxide was photoexcited with the 2144 and 2265 A lines of a low-pressure cadmium arc. The resultant NO can react with unexcited NO or with H2, CH4, or C2H6 to produce N2 and N2O. The relative reactivities of the excited NO with NO, H2, and CH4 are in the ratio 1.000.320.86. The species RNO HNO, CH3NO, C2H5NO can generate N2 in a chain RNO 2NO yielding R N2 NO3, followed by R NOM yielding RNOM, or be removed in a competing reaction RNO NO yielding RO N20. Author
