Abstract:

General equations of motion are developed for the motion of liquid droplets released into vertical and horizontal airstreams. These equations are used first to compute the trajectories of individual water droplets in a stationary vertical air jet that impinges on the ground from large heights. The simplified water droplet trajectories from an aircraft, with respect to the ground and with respect to the aircraft, are also calculated. The evaporation of freely falling water droplets in still air is studied, using theoretical and experimental data found in the meteorological literature. Curves of droplet lifetime, corresponding falling distances and percentage evaporation in a 100-ft. fall are calculated as a function of droplet size, relative humidity and temperature. The factors of importance in the water bombing of forest fires and aerial agricultural spraying, brought out by the calculations, are discussed. Author
