Abstract:

Basic instrumentation and diagnostic studies for operation of the adiabatic mirror-cusp AMC experiment are essentially complete. Analytical studies of plasma buildup, plasma stability, and particle motion are in progress. Computer studies were made of charged particle motion, loophole injection and arc ionization of the injected beam. Neutral yield from the arc converter was increased by a factor of two. The large accelerator has been operated at 250 kv with a beam of 8 ma. The 600-kev, 300-ma accelerator power supply was found to be defective and is still undergoing repair and modification by General Electric. Determination of stray magnetic fields in the transition region continues. The AMC machine design was completed and procurement begun. A test coil program was undertaken which resulted in several design modifications. A machine was designed and built to produce model coils with integral radial slotted cooling passages. Sample coils have been produced. This system produces a coil of great strength and high stacking factor. A major coil problem remains selection of the proper coolant for low-field operation of the AMC machine. Author
