Abstract:
In this paper, two variation principles are formulated for the theory of finite elasticity. The first variational principle is an extension of Hu and Washizus variational principle and the second is a generalization of the theory of stationary potential energy in classical elastostatics. New variational variables are introduced. The Euler equations are Rivlins field equations expressed in terms of undeformed state variables for the theory of finite elasticity. Three examples are solved by the variational technique for illustrative pruposes. Author
