Abstract:

An automatic correction circuit for use with thin-film heat-transfer gauges and analogue networks has been developed and successfully tested. Such a correction circuit is essential when the gauge temperature becomes high enough to cause changes in the gauge properties, thereby introducing nonlinear effects. The circuit has been tested in the UTIAS 4 in. x 7 in. Hypersonic Shock Tube at shock Mach numbers were ionization was negligible. Excellent agreement has been obtained between theory and the corrected experimental data up to rises in gauge temperatures of 75 C. It is expected that the same results will hold up to 150 C, as long as the thermal diffusivity of the backing material remains sensibly constant. In addition, useful theoretical corrections have also been obtained. Author
