Abstract:
An investigation of the gamma sub 8 quartets of rare earth ions was made by studying their electron paramagnetic resonance in selected cubic crystals. The theory of EPR for gamma sub 8 quartets was developed using an effective hamiltonian. Numerical calculations were made. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements were for Er3 in MgO, CaO and SrO crystals and Cy3 in CaF2 and SrF2 crystals. For all these crystals the gamma sub 8 quartets have been observed. The corresponding crystalline field parameters were determined. The results could be explained by a modified point charge model. Measurements of spin-lattice relaxation time were made for Er3 in CaO. The results checked qualitatively with theoretical calculations. Considering the present status of crystal-growing technology, the change of a gamma sub 8 is not promising. The main reasons are 1 the presence of various axial field spectra due to change compensation processes, and 2 line broadening due to crystal inperfections. Author
