Abstract:

A technique has been developed that allows one to consistently supercool relatively large masses, up to four grams, of gallium. The maximum level of undercooling reached, 76 C., is the same as that reported for droplets of gallium 10-100 microns in diameter. The technique allows one to control the initiation of solidification, observe, and record dendritic and isothermal growth during solidification, and to correlate high speed motion pictures taken during solidification with Laue back-reflection x-ray diffraction orientations of the final ingot.
