Abstract:

The results of preliminary studies on potential whisker-reinforcing high-temperature eutectic alloys are presented. The eutectic compositions have been re-established in the Ni-Ni3B and NiNiBe systems and the published eutectic composition confirmed in the Ta-Ta2C system. Unidirectional solidification experiments have indicated that the Ni-Ni3B, Ni-NiBe, and Ta-Ta2C systems are normal eutectics. The systems, Ni-Ni3B and Ni-NiBe, have been unidirectionally solidified at slow rates to form lamellar microstructures. The Ni-Ni3B system is comprised of the boride as the matrix with discontinuous Ni platelets as the dispersed phase, while the Ni-NiBe system consists of a Ni matrix with dispersed NiBe platelets. Although undirectional solidification experiments have been unsuccessful to date in the systems, Ta-Ta2C and Ti-TiB, needle-like phases of Ta2C and TiB have been isolated from eutectic microstructure. The results of preliminary mechanical testing and microhardness determinations on ascast and unidirectionally solidified eutectic and pro-eutectic alloys in each of the systems are presented. Author
