Abstract:
A mass spectrometer was used to study the kinetics of the oxygen-tungsten reaction over the temperature range 1400 to 3150 K at oxygen pressures as high as 0.0002 torr. The main products of chemical reaction are identified as W3O9, W2O6, WO3, and WO2 their intensities are given as a function of surface temperature and oxygen pressure. At high surface temperatures, atomic oxygen is observed in an abundance comparable to the impingement rate of molecular oxygen on the surface. These observations lead to a reaction mechanism involving two types of oxygen on the surface, the first tightly bound with a desorption energy near 144 kcalmole, the second more loosely bound with a desorption energy near 114 kcalmole.
