Abstract:

This report is part of a projected series dealing with methods of identifying and classifying significant physical environmental factors. This paper deals with some of the problems of providing an accurate description of vegetation for military purposes. Military users of information on vegetation are more interested in structural characteristics of plants than species names. One of the first steps in a methodology for vegetation analysis is to list all possible characteristics of vegetation a second step is to consider methods for obtaining this information. The first part of this paper concerns itself with listing plant and animal characteristics that might conceivably be of importance and includes an outline and decimal numbering system for these characteristics. The second part considers vegetation sampling methods in general and analyzes a method that has been and is presently being used by military vegetation teams. Author
