Abstract:

This report describes an investigation of H production by microorganisms. Studies carried out previously on the use of microorganisms for H production in fuel cells were analyzed to determine the investigations needed to prove the feasibility of using microbial H generators in the field. Studies were begun in two areas 1 the determination of factors which limit the rate of H evolution from Clostridium welchii, which is the best H producing microbe tested, and 2 the possibility of using cellulose as a natural substrate for H production. The studies on the mechanism of H evolution showed that the different components of the hydrogenlyase system can be measured. The ability of cellulase from bacteria, fungi and crude enzyme reparations to produce significant amounts of glucose from cellulose was tested. Very little glucose was formed. Author
