Abstract:
The application of computers to the control of separate on-line chemical processes is rapidly becoming an established technique. Methods of extending and advancing this type of computer control must not be considered. The authors first discuss fundamental considerations such as the performance criterion, process characteristics and computer control system requirements, then briefly review conventional applications. The main concern is with developments expected in the near future in on-line alarm detection, data logging and data processing, direct plant control, integrated plant control and optimization-direct plant control, integrated plant control and optimization-direct optimization, model techniques and self-optimization through learning.
