Abstract:

Crystals of CaF2 containing transition metal ions and crystals of CdF2 containing transition metal and rare-earth ions were grown and the spectra measured. The transition metal ions are either not fluorescent or have only broad fluorescent bands. The ions in the first half of the 3d series prefer the 3 oxidation state and were found to have large Dq values 11000 to 11500 cm, whereas those in the latter half of the series prefer the 2 oxidation state and have Dq values less than 1500 cm. The rareearth ions all go into CdF2 in the 3 oxidation state and apparently cannot be reduced to the 2 state. The absorption and fluorescent spectra of the CdF2 rare-earth-doped crystals are typical of those seen for rare-earth ions in many other crystals. The linewidths of the narrow fluorescent lines in CaF2Tm and CaF2Dy were studied both by conventional spectrographic, interferometric, and optical magnetic resonance methods.
