Abstract:
Porpoise is a buoyancy propelled underwater vehicle designed for utilization initially as an oceanographic research vehicle. It is designed to alternately descend and ascend as it glides through the water. Buoyancy control is utilized to effect the depth change and to obtain a thrust force along the flight path. The vehicle is equipped with wings hinged on a skewed axis so as the vehicle descends and the wings position to positive dihedral and have a positive angle of attack. As the vehicle ascends due to a created change in buoyancy, the wings position to negative dihedral and have a negative angle of attack causing the wing lift force to oppose the ascent of the vehicle.
