Abstract:
A study was made of the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline AgCl in several complex-forming environments. Severe embrittlement was observed in concentrated aqueous solutions of NaCl, HCl, LiCl, CuCl2, NaBr, LiBr, NaSCN and Na2S2O3, the fracture mode changing from ductile and transcrystalline, as in air, to brittle and intercrystalline. In solutions of NH4OH, CsCl and KCl, ductile behavior was observed. It is concluded that embrittlement is associated with the presence of complex-ions of high negative charge. Through the mechanism is not fully understood, it is suggested that embrittlement involves the adsorption and interaction of such complex-ions at stressed grain boundaries of large misorientation.
