A theory of the demagnetizing field in nonellipsoidal bodies is described. In this theory the total magnetic field is expressed as a series of ascending powers in MHo, where M is the saturation magnetization and Ho the applied magnetic field. The general theory has been applied to rectangular prisms. The observation of delayed magneto-elastic signals both in reflection and transmission is reported. A rapid variation of the strength of the signals with dc field was observed and is attributed to the occurrence of magneto-elastic resonance near the end faces of the sample. The material YGFA-9 composition Y1.9 Gd1.1 Fe4.5 A10.5 O12 has been tested in a waveguide in order to establish more precisely the correlation with cavity measurements on small samples.
