Abstract:
These studies were done to determine if the flinch-jump animal analgesiometric method could detect the analgetic effects of pentazocine. Also, to determine if a synergism of analgetic activity could be produced by adding methamphetamine to pentazocine. The flinch-jump procedure showed pentazocine to be an analgesic with a potency about one-third to one-quarter as great as morphine. Methamphetamine in combination with pentazocine raised the potency by a synergistic action. It was suggested that the combination of methamphetamine and pentazocine might have the following properties 1 non-addicting, 2 a good analgetic potency, 3 little autonomic depression, and 4 no sedation.
