Abstract:
The spectral absorption coefficient of heated air was calculated over the frequency interval and temperature range where electronic transitions in diatomic molecules are the dominant mechanism. With the aid of experimentally determined constants, the spectra of six important band systems were theoretically reconstructed. These spectra and the corresponding line intensities were preserved in the form of a magnetic tape atlas. Average absorption coefficients and their role in radiative transfer are discussed. A method of calculating group absorption coefficients based on a sampling technique is described. Digital computer programs based on this procedure were used to compute optical transmissions through heated air. Typical results of the calculation are presented.
