The design, fabrication, assembly and test of two liquid ultrasonic deflection cells for the demonstrational model of an active optical imaging system were completed. The cells, employing tetrachloroethylene as the ultrasonic medium are currently being incorporated into the demonstrational model. Of the various test procedures employed to evaluate cell performance, two which are of particular significance are described in detail. The first is a transducer mapping technique to determine the vibrational characteristics of the transducer itself. The second is the use of high speed streak photography as a means to measure overall beam fidelity as it is effected by 1 light beam diameter, 2 light beam position relative to the sonic pressure nodal points, 3 light beam angular deflection amplitude, and 4 sonic disturbances, such as cavitation and streaming, within the cell.
