Effort was made to determine the capabilities and necessary compromises in preparing cathodoluminescent films by a chemical solution spray process. This spray process is capable of forming cathodoluminescent films in situ on substrates which can withstand a spray temperature of 300 C and a heat treatment temperature of 600 C. Desired dopants may be incorporated by adding them to the spray solution. The cathodoluminescent film compositions investigated were CdWO4, CdWO4Sm, CdWO4Ce, ZnWO4, Zn2SiO4Mn, CdSAg, ZnSAg, and ZnCdSAg. Properties of these films were evaluated by x-ray diffraction analysis, by photo- and cathodoluminescent brightness and spectral emission, and by thermoluminescent glowcurve studies.
