Abstract:
Two cases of infrared radiation measurements in the 8-12 micron range are studied. The radiation readings are related to cloud patterns and surface temperatures in the Caribbean Sea and adjacent areas. These two cases demonstrate some of the synoptic uses and limitations of the radiation data for cloud detection and surface temperature determinations. The radiation data were found useful in determining areas of general cloudness. An attempt to relate the infrared radiation measurements to surface temperature suggested a close relation between the precipitable water content and the difference between actual and effective radiation surface temperatures. Determination of this relationship was hindered by the absence of a cloud-free area. Author
