Methods for continuous formation of refractory fibers, or whiskers, by vapor phase growth are under investigation. The vapor phase processes are 1 aluminum halide oxidation and 2 aluminum oxide reduction and recrystallization. Preliminary experimentation with the halide system at temperatures around 1200 C indicates that in order to obtain continuous fiber production, it is essential to 1 control the super-saturation, 2 control the temperature, and 3 probably provide suitable nuclei for crystal growth.
