An unusual alumina crucible failure is analyzed and a mechanism postulated to account for the inordinately severe corrosion occurring near a localized region of high stress. The binary phase diagram of iron and oxygen is reviewed along with the pseudo binary of FeO-Al2O3 and the ternary phase relationship of Fe-Al-O at 1350 C. These data, along with other information, are used to suggest a reaction similar to stress corrosion in metals. Author
