Abstract:

The consequences of inhibitory or excitatory interactions between pacemaker neurons were predicted mathematically and through digital-computer simulations, and were then confirmed experimentally in abdominal ganglia of Aplysia califor nica and in stretch receptors of Procambarus clarkii. Characteristic self-stablizing discharge patterns occur under conditions that do not involve feedback. Increased arrival rates of inhibitory or excitatory input can cause a paradoxical increase or decrease in firing rate. Author
