A theoretical analysis is given of the unsteady flow within a liquid- filled cylinder of finite length, which is started impulsively to spin about its axis. It is established that a secondary flow, which is caused by the cylinder ends, has a remarkable effect on the generation of spin in the liquid. The theoretical results are compared with experimental observations and good agreement is found.
