Abstract:

Friction measurements were carried out as a function of temperature using solid surfaces covered by various solid films. The films included a soft metal lead and two hard metals nickel and chromium applied in various thicknesses, oxide coatings produced naturally by high temperature oxidation of Hastelloy alloys, and a silver coating produced continuously by electrodeposition during sliding. The effectiveness of these coatings depends in a rather complex way on their thickness, their adhesion, and the difference in strength between them and their substrates. Author
