Abstract:

The effects of circuit resistance and bridgewire length on the initiation of PETN by exploding 1 mil diameter platinum wires were investigated. A one microfarad capacitor charged to 2000 volts was used as the energy source. Increasing circuit resistance reduces the current density and the energy input to the wire lowering the probability of production detonation in PETN. The importance of keeping the extraneous circuit resistance to an absolute minimum is shown.
