Abstract:

An experimental study of the pumping speed of N2O at 77 K is presented. It is shown that the pumping speed remains constant in the freemolecular flow region, increases in the lower transition region, and then declines very rapidly as the pressure is further increased. The rapid decline in pumping speed in the higher pressure region is caused by the combined effects of the noncondensable gas present in the system and thermal overloading of the cryosurface. However, the exact contribution of each has not been determined. Author
