Abstract:

The development of high-power modulating-anode klystrons has presented the equipment design engineer with the problem of providing adequate protection for the klystron in the event of a fault. A versatile electronic crowbar system has been developed to provide for this contingency. This single quotes system consists of two units 1. a multiple-gap fixed-space discharge unit capable of operating with an infinite range, that is, from zero plate voltage to the maximum operating voltage and 2. a logic unit capable of providing a series of trigger pulses programmed for the particular needs of the system. The system provides protection against the initial capacitor discharge and limits capacitor recharge until the circuit breakers have opened. A particular application for an equipment operating at 140 kv, 8 amperes average current, with an energy storage bank of 110,000 joules, is discussed. Author
