The work accomplished in the School of Electrical Engineering at Cornell University entitled Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Linear-Beam Microwave Tubes is decribed. The broad objective of this program was to investigate, both experimentally and analytically, those factors which limit the performance of linearbeam tubes and to determine possible means of improving performance. Four lines of approach were chosen and were designated as follows fundamental phenomena in linear-beam tubes efficiency enhancement and velocity-filter study investigation of the response of linear-beam tubes to nanosecond pulses and study of noise cancellation in traveling-wave tubes. The studies of fundamental phenomena in linear-beam tubes are directed toward obtaining a better understanding of tube behavior, whereas the remaining three approaches deal with specific problems of linearbeam tube performance.
