Abstract:

An NBS velocimeter was used to obtain measurements of the fluctuations in the velocity of sound at three shallow depths in the Virgin Islands Basin. The instrument was suspended from an anchored ship. During one run a simultaneous measurement was made with a resonantcavity meter. The observed fluctuations are characterized in terms of the coefficient of variation and the autocorrelation function. The method of analysis was designed to reduce the effects of instrument motion upon the result. Author
