The one-dimensional theory of stress-wave propagation has been found to adequately represent a three dimensional experimental situation in both the elastic and plastic regimes. An air gun was used to accelerate a rod and impact it against a stationary test rod to produce a force pulse. The strain resulting from this pulse was recorded at various positions along the test rod. The deviation between the theoretical and experimental values of maximum stress was less than 11.5.
