Abstract:

A model for a bandlimited quantum communications channel and the channel capacity of such a channel in the absence of external and thermal noise are investigated. The channel capacity of a quantum channel is affected by quantization in two important ways. The mere fact of quantization itself, i.e., that a quantized signal is restricted to a finite number of states which it can assume, limits the ability of the signal to contain information. The other factor which degrades the performance of a channel is that every bandlimited signal contains an irreducible uncertainty which is due to the uncertainty principle. This report represents an attempt to construct a reasonable model which takes these two factors into consideration. Author
