This report covers research in theoretical analysis, fabrication, testing and applications studies on a fundamentally advanced concept in the field of energy transmission. The technique herein discussed involves the transmission of radiant energy through a tube from a heat source such as a nuclear reactor or a solar concentrator to some other location in a spacecraft without an intermediate Carnot cycle limited conversion process. This technique is particularly useful for applications in which a significant portion of the total energy requirement is in the form of thermal energy. Successful utilization of this technique would have a profound effect on space technology in general, and, for systems utilizing solar concentrators andor electrical propulsion, it could radically alter the results of present preliminary designs and mission analyses based on these designs.
