Abstract:

A modification of the voltmeter-ammeter method was used to measure the impedance at frequencies between 20 and 1000 cps of log detectors with and without bias and drive. The effects of small changes in bias are not predictable and are small in magnitude. The presence of drive has no consistent effect on impedance. Short periods of time o bias affect the unbiased impedance of log detectors, but the magnitude, and prehaps even direction, of such effects are not generally predictable. When a change in test conditions has an effect on impedance it is generally, on the capacitive reactance. The fact that successive peaks in the detector output ripple current are usually of unequal amplitude is due to dissimilarities between cathode faces. Normally, only the fundamental and even harmonics of the drive signal appear in the detector output. An analogy between detector ripple waveform and the output waveform of a rectifier circuit is shown. The magnitude of the fundamental current in detector output is not necessarily linearly related to the logarithm of the drive pressure. Author
