The first pilot run was completed and 500 capacitors were sent for life testing. The wet electrolytic evaluation procedure for sintered anodes was used to differentiate between tantalum powder from two suppliers in two grades. These tests led to a theory which differentiates between leakage and breakdown voltage as critieria of quality. A piece of equipment which can be used as an in-process inspection procedure for finished anodes was made. The test consists of measuring the breakdown voltage of anodes which were coated with manganese dioxide. Attempts to produce very small radius points by etching tantalum wire were not successful. A masking technique suitable for isolating small areas of tantalum metal was worked on. A sample of single crystal tantalum was obtained. A study of time and temperature for pyrolysis and the effect of the number of impregnations was made. Samples of capacitors sealed under different drying conditions were made and put on test. Capacitors sealed under high humidity conditions will be tested next quarter. Author
