Abstract:

A simplified chemical kinetic model is proposed for the thermal ionization of air, permitting approximate closed form solutions for the electron distribution in the inviscid flow field and boundary layer of sharp cones. As long as the gas is still far out of equilibrium and the frozen temperature distribution remains valid, the electron density per unit pressure is found to vary with the similarity parameter, confirming binary scaling. An extreme dependence of electron density on cone angle and length is found. A comparison is presented with the more exact calculations of other investigators to assess the range of validity of the approximate theory. Author
