Abstract:

Using IGY Data analyses of Obasi 1963, the mean meridional circulation for the southern hemisphere is measured indirectly, by means of the method of characteristics. The horizontal and vertical momentum convergences enter as forcing functions. The calculations generally confirm Obasis directly measured three cell pattern, but there are strong differences in cell intensity and position. Comparison with northern hemisphere calculations of Mintz and Lang 1955 show strong similarities, except for the polar direct cell. The possibility of negative vertical eddy viscosities is considered. Author
