Abstract:

This paper is concerned with problems of management, specifically the problem of organizing extensive bodies of data in such a way that the data are responsive to changes in decisions. The subject matter is the ship and analysis develops relations between the equipments aboard ship in order to determine an inherent classification of the jobs that a ship can do. Associated with each job is a sequence of equipments and it is possible to obtain information on these equipments that is organized according to the jobs of a ship. These jobs can be assembled and reassembled into different missions by tactical analysis. The appendices provide a preliminary analysis for an abstract i.e., composite ship which can be used to organize a flexible retrieval system for the Navy that is responsive to changes in tactical analysis. The paper is a pilot study in the problem-area of information systems that would beresponsive to command control decisions. Some suggestions are given for extension of the analysis. Author
