The object of this program is to study the interaction of a sound field and the burning zone of a solid propellant. The pertinent point of the investigation is to determine, for discrete sound frequencies, whether or not the flame zone is capable of amplifying or attenuating sound waves which pass through it. The variation of the interaction of the flame zone and the sound field with frequency is also of prime interest. If in the initial investigations a measurable interaction is detected, then subsequent investigations will attempt to quantitatively describe the interaction in terms of an acoustic impedance of the flame zone. The present reporting period covers primarily the design, acquisition, and construction of the experimental apparatus and the results of some initial testing. Author
