Abstract:

In preparing rocket motores for firing, penetrants are sprayed onto the gas-side surfaces of graphite nozzle-throat inserts to facilitate prefiring inspection. A study was made to determine the effects, if any, of such penetrants on the erosion rates of graphites. For this study, throat area changes were measured after firing twelve EM-4 test motors EJC propellant, six motors incorporating ATJ graphite throat inserts and six pyrolytic graphite inserts. These inserts had been 1 sprayed with Partek Black-lite penetrant, 2 sprayed with alcohol penetrant, or 3 left unsprayed. Examination of the throat inserts after the firings and of the data obtained disclosed no difference in the appearance or erosion rates. It is concluded that a fluorescent Partek penetrant has no detrimental effet on graphite. Author
