Abstract:

The form of the maximum-likelihood detector for binary signals transmitted sequentially over a channel with memory is examined. The channel memory is assumed short enough so that there is intersymbol interference between adjacent symbols only. In all cases implementation is achieved with adders, unit delays, two matched filters, and nonlinear amplifiers. With the aid of a simplifying assumption, upper and lower bounds of the per symbol error probability are derived. These bounds check reasonably well with the results of a digital Monte Carlo experiment. Author
