Abstract:

This report presents a gross parametric treatment of the trade-offs associated with total or partial launch vehicle recovery. A basic recovery equation is defined, which evaluates the ratio of specific cost or delivery cost on a dollar per pound basis between the two mission modes i. e., with and without recovery. This recovery equation gives a direct comparison between the two mission modes in dollars per pound of payload delivered, the most meaningful parameter for the purpose of comparison. Three special cases of the basic recovery equation are derived these special cases are applicable only under restrictive conditions but prove useful in evaluating limits or breakevens. These cases include 1 economic breakeven point, 2 required recovery efficiency, and 3 maximum recovery gear weight. Author
