Abstract:

Modes of guided high-frequency electromagnetic propagation along an air-bounded, axially magnetized plasma column of finite radius, a, are studied through the technique of parameter space mapping. Three classes of guided wave can exist on a magneto-plasmaguide and were found to be characterized by distinctive cutoff and resonance surfaces. The wave classes have been designated as 1 STATIC, low frequency waves 2 DYNAMIC, high frequency waves and 3 SURFACE WAVE, characterized by concentration of field energy at the plasma air interface. Evidence has been found for the continued existence of surface waves into the regime of large magnetization. A semi-quantitative method has been developed for sketching dispersion curves from parameter space information combined with analysis at frequencies adjacent to resonance and cutoff. Dispersion curves have been presented for all classes of wave, all orders of azimuthal variation, and all values of the parameters. It has been found that in addition to dispersion curves with either positive or negative slope, waves also exist which change from forward to backward or vice versa with increasing wave number.
