Abstract:

The approach taken is that the purpose of communications is to transfer information from one set of users to another, efficiently and reliably. The authors contend that a communications system comprises many diverse components, one of which is the communications medium or channel. It is shown that considering the channel as a component of an information transmission system not only makes the solution of modern communications problems theoretically possible, but also places within it the current state of digital technology.
