Abstract:

Experimental data and supporting calculations are presented concerning the size and weight limitations which should be applied to electrical components which are intended to be mounted on printed wiring boards and supported solely by axial lead wires. Results of experiments concerning component mounting indicate that vibration tests can induce forces of sufficient magnitude to cause failure of the lead wire supporting the component. This failure can occur even though the component weight and the lead wire configuration are within the limitations defined in MIL-E-5400. Factors which contribute to the problem are listed. Recommended lead wire configurations applicable to mounted components with specified weight limits together with conditions under which these recommendations are made are given. Author
